World Cup Special: Women of the Week

It’s often called the beautiful game and now we understand why, from Costa Rican babes to German powerhouses, the Brazilian World Cup will always be remember for its bikini-clad fans, thanks to ITV’s excellent (if shameless) camera work and the power of Twitter.

THE LUCKY MACSCOT,

Jale Berahimi took the World Cup by storm and stole headlines across the globe when she became Costa Rica’s lucky mascot after their shock Italy win. Her Twitter snaps with the stars, including BBC pundit Rio Ferdinand, drew worldwide attention, as did her frequent selfies from the beach picturing her in perilously small bikinis.

THE CELEBRITY

Rihanna showed up to the World Cup Final and almost stole the show. Her personal, but not-so private, take on the Mexican wave had paparazzi falling over themselves and she won the affections of the world champions too – even partying with them after their victory.

THE WAGS

It’s no surprise that Ann Kathrin-Brommel (left, Mario Gotze’s girlfriend) and Sarah Bradner (right, Bastian Schweinsteiger’s other half) have World Cup winning husbands, most men would go to the ends of the earth to keep these two happy. Unlike WAGs of old, the German party lounged on the beach and subtlety supported their men with a admirable class, that’s not to say they didn’t attract any attention.

THE POLITICIAN

If there was any doubt as to where Angela Merkel’s allegiances lay (in bed with Europe or at home in Germany), she laid them to rest at the World Cup. Her celebrations were nearly as wild as those of the exuberant Dutch manager (now a viral sensation) and reflected the mania triggered back home where thousands celebrate into the early hours.
