Stay stylish on the commute

Let’s cut to the chase here: no one likes commuting, especially a gentleman. Unless you work from home or you live five minutes away from work, the likelihood is that your day starts and ends with a hellish journey – most of which is below ground. While we are aware that cycling is all the rage and definitely a preferable way to start your day, we’re going to assume that your commute involves general discomfort and being within extremely close proximity to others. One thing that should make you better is knowing that you’re looking stylish on your commute – follow our guide and we can assure that you will.

TRAVEL LIKE A GENTLEMAN

A true gentleman is one who looks pristine at all times and one who should never be juggling too many things. If you’re attempting to carry your phone, your newspaper, your coffee, your umbrella, your jacket and/or anything else that you might need throughout the day, the likelihood is that you’re going to look like a bit of a mess. Remember George Clooney in ‘Up in The Air’? That is how a gentleman travels – with two free hands and no fuss.

DON’T LET TRAINERS COME INTO IT

We touched on this here but it’s an extremely important point nonetheless: there is no excuse for you to wear trainers with your suit – no matter how uncomfortable your work shoes are. We can guarantee that you’re going to see more than one attractive person on your commute and they’re going to instantly judge you on what you’re wearing. Trainers and a suit are not something you want to be judged on, trust us.

CHUCK ON AN OVERCOAT

If you don’t have to wear a suit everyday but still want the opportunity to look dapper on your commute, may we suggest investing in a decent overcoat. While there are no rules on what kind of coat you should be wearing – it’s a matter of personal preference – a trench coat is instantly going to gain you points in the style stakes, so we’d always recommend going for one of those. Every gentleman should know that you can’t go wrong with Burberry.

WATCH YOUR LAYERS

Yes, it may be getting colder and colder every morning but you must remember, gentlemen, that the outside air temperature is absolutely no reflection on the underground air temperature. A gentleman will no longer look like one if he’s hot and bothered – so exercise caution when it comes to layering up in the morning and we promise that you’ll stay stylish.

DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THE MAN BAG

While we personally think the minimal look is the best one for a gentleman to adopt, we understand that it’s not always possible. If you’re going to travel with bulk, an easy way to stay more stylish is to invest in a decent bag. While it doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, it’s still an important investment. We can guarantee that you’re going to look much more stylish with one simple bag rather than your arms and hands full of clothes/products/technology. Paul Smith always have great options, especially this.
