The superyacht destination of the moment

The coast of Montenegro is probably most famous for hosting silver screen icons such as Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton during its glittering 60s heyday. It continues to hold that sense of old Hollywood glamour today, and in the last few years has experienced a surge in popularity as one of the hotspots of the Mediterranean, particularly with those travelling by superyacht.

This is of course in part due to the spectacular scenery on offer. A departure from the built-up coastlines of the main luxury yachting destinations of the West Med, the backdrops here are mountainous and rugged while the coast is indented with isolated coves and medieval villages. But much of Montenegro’s renaissance is thanks to Porto Montenegro, the Mediterranean’s leading superyacht homeport that The Yacht Harbour Association considered to be 2015’s ‘Marina of the Year’.

Set within the stunning surroundings of UNESCO World Heritage Site the Bay of Kotor, Porto Montenegro has continued to develop and modernise to keep pace with the ever-demanding needs of superyacht owner’s. 420 berths are on offer in the port and another 50 are in the making, with sizes reaching up to a staggering 180 metres to accommodate for the ‘bigger is better’ theme going on in the yachting industry. This will also make way for the yachts that will be arriving from far and wide to be displayed as part of the first ever Superyacht Rendezvous Montenegro this July which has for the last 25 years been held in Monaco.

The focus of the marina on creating a comprehensive luxury lifestyle environment is one of its unique selling points. The facilities are exceptional for both residents and visitors, with 24-hour support and tax-free fuel for superyacht owner’s and a wide range of smart bars, shops, world-class restaurants and an exclusive Lido Mar pool club to choose from. There’s even a Knightsbridge School of London that provides day and boarding options for the growing expat community. If you prefer land-based accommodation however, the five-star Regent Hotel was opened last year followed by the recently launched Regent Pool Club Residences for those who like the marina so much they just can’t leave.
