If you do one thing this weekend, go here

Wandering around Soho looking for a place to dine can be a minefield. With restaurants popping up on every street corner, there has never been more choice on where to settle for supper in the heart of London. However, a cosy retreat has been found in the form of Ember Yard. The laid-back eatery is the fourth restaurant from Salt Yard Group and takes inspiration from Spanish and Italian methods of cooking over charcoal. Located at number 60 Berwick Street, the two storey restaurant and bar presents a lively open plan kitchen adding to the authenticity of their ‘home cooking’ style.

The Cuisine

Influenced by travels around the regions of Spain and Italy – in particular the Basque country and Tuscany, the cuisine is a harmonious mix of flavours from these two countries. Ember Yard is completely inspired by the primal technique of cooking over wood and charcoal. So expect smokey flavours that pack a punch and a delicious mix of artisan cheese and charcuterie. The perfect bites to accompany a crisp glass (or two) of Prosecco for a weekday supper with friends.

The Vibe

Cosy yet vibrant would be the best way to describe the welcoming atmosphere at Ember Yard. The open plan kitchen you can see from your table is the perfect reminder of how your food is being rustically cooked over charcoal and wood. It’s a retreat in the heart of Soho to enjoy delicious food, fun cocktails and catch-up with friends.

The Food

Sharing small plates is how the format works here, meaning you get to taste a piece of everything from roasted and chargrilled ibérico pork ribs to smoked crab croquettes served with brown crab and lemon aioli. Large plates to share as a group are also available in the form of hot smoke Gloucester old spot pork belly with smoke apple and cider, as well as smoked and grilled Hereford ribeye with smoked butter and thyme. Around three small dishes each is recommend to really sample a taste of Ember Yard has to offer. I would personally recommend ordering a few courgette flowers stuffed with goat’s cheese and drizzled with honey – they were delicious! Finally, the smoked chocolate cake with cherries, star anise and mascarpone is not to be missed.

The Drinks

Ember Yard has created its own unique list of cocktails specifically inspired by grilling and smoking classic ingredients, adding a fun and distinctive twist to their drinks menu. The separate bar is a great spot to have an aperitif before dining. The impressive selection of exclusively Spanish and Italian wines are perfect to accompany the matching style of food.

The Damage

Totally subjective to how many plates you order, with meat and fish plates averaging at £8 each and vegetable based dishes more towards £6. The large plates come in between £20-£30, so not for a budget but nothing too extravagant for a weekday supper.

Best For

Intimate catch-ups with friends or an informal date night.
