Simplicity refined: A. Lange & Söhne’s new Saxonia Thin

When A. Lange & Söhne’s Saxonia Thin made its debut in 2011, it was the watchmaker’s thinnest offering to date. Five years later, they have released a subtly reworked version in which simple, elegant design is underpinned by a wafer-thin movement and outstanding build quality. Having resisted any temptation to change the case, hands, crown or proportions – all held in equally high regard by admirers of the 2011 model – A. Lange & Söhne have instead focused on refining the dial. In the 2016 edition, the lucid white dial retains the baton-style hour markers made from solid gold, but does away with the small dots that sat above them on the 2011 edition, giving the updated watch an even cleaner look.

The 2016 watch is also available in either a 37 or 40 millimetre case, both of which contain A. Lange & Söhne’s pencil-thin calibre L093.1, a manually-wound movement only 2.9 millimetres in diameter. With the thickness of every part having been reduced to the absolute minimum, it may seem rather scant, but this doesn’t translate to any compromise on quality. True haute horologists, A. Lange & Söhne produce only a few thousand watches per year, lavishing an unusual amount of attention on each watch. The movement of the Saxonia Thin showcases intricate ornamentation throughout, and even the parts hidden from view are finished with meticulous care.

With a 72 hour power reserve when fully wound, it also has more longevity than most thin watches, which usually boast no more than 45 hours. As such, it could be taken off on a Friday night and replaced on Monday morning without any risk of stopping. All in all, it’s a discreet but beautiful watch – one that seems to exude that quiet sort of confidence that comes with pedigree.
