How To Know Which Jean Cut Suits You Best

A fashion fundamental, it doesn’t get more essential than jeans. Everyone wears them, but not everyone wears them well. As a style sin, poorly chosen denim is down in the depths. It ages you like few other sartorial mistakes but a well-picked pair is the mark of gent who knows his way around a wardrobe, both on and off-duty.

BASIC DOS & DON’TS

-Do try before you buy. Have a walk around the store and check the pocket space before committing; you’ll be wearing them a lot after all.

Do not buy a flared or boot-cut, they’ve had their time and now it’s over, dead and buried. It’s an unflattering style no one should still be subscribing too.

Do make sure they fit, they should be not pooling out at the ankle and fit comfortably either on your natural waist or hips, whatever your preference

-Do not opt for overt branding. Subtlety is the new face of luxury and forever the friend of style.

-Do keep the wash simple, white jeans are a tricky subject and coloured takes are a bit novelty. Stick to classic, black, blue and indigo washes for a more timeless option.

WHICH PAIR FOR YOUR BODY TYPE…

ATHLETIC BUILD

If you’ve spent some time in the gym honing your physique, you’re hard work will certainly show when it comes to wearing denim; that is if you’ve got the cut right. If your leg muscles have been built up, aim for a straighter fit, essentially you want a bit of room in the thigh and legs so you’re not strangling them.

A straight cut is as the name suggests straight up and down, there’s very little deviation in terms tapering.

LONG AND LEAN

CosJeans-TGJ.03

Long in the leg and lean in the body? You’ll want something slim but not skinny. You want to add a little bit of weight to your legs, not much though, to balance things out. Go too skinny and you’ll begin to border on the beanpole aesthetic. Look for a cut that skims the shape of your legs but doesn’t hold onto them, grazing the fabric as opposed to starting a full-on physical relationship.

ON THE SHORTER SIDE

With the right styling you can add the appearance of more length if your leg, ideal for those a bit bereft in this area. A higher rise, slimmer, tapered leg and darker colour will help give the illusion of a few extra precious inches.

HEAVY SET

If you’re a heavier guy, a wide-ish leg can help balance you your body. Something too tapered will draw attention to problem areas and throw things a little out of proportion. On the other hand, don’t go too baggy; this will just add weight as opposed to the opposite. A relaxed, straight cut is ideal particularly with a low rise to sit under your stomach.
