Introducing Jaguar’s new and improved XF

For Jaguar, 2015 is the self-proclaimed ‘year of the cat’, so it was fitting that the British marque launched their new XF by driving it over the Thames. Tightroping on two wires, it creeped along like a feline balancing on a fence, but if you look beyond the PR stunts, the car itself is more than worthy of its predecessor. Editor’s note: if you want to view said balancing act, watch the video below:

The first generation XF was a storming hit, paving the way for the Jaguar of the future when it was introduced back in 2007. Its sleek lines and purposeful silhouette garnered it plenty of fans, yet the diversity of its models is what made it such a commercial success. The second coming only adds to the lustre of the first, improving on its looks as well as tailoring specific elements to the demands of Jaguar’s top customers – we’re always impressed when big brands take feedback on board.

Most manufacturers tend to play it very safe when introducing new versions of their most commercially successful models. Jaguar have gone to impressive lengths in redesigning the XF though, and what is presented here is entirely new. The front end takes on a more aggressive stance, with the ‘S’ model in particular receiving wider intakes and sharper lines.

The car is slightly longer too, giving more interior space, yet it retains that familiar XF shape, slotting perfectly between the new XE and XJ families. As is always the case with Jaguars though, the way it drives is the biggest talking point. The XF has never been the most driver-focused Jaguar, but this time round the boffins at the Castle Bromwich factory have gone to admirable lengths to improve things. Technology from the sporty F-Type has been borrowed, including double wishbone suspension, a 28% stiffer chassis and lighter aluminium bodywork.

Engine-wise, the new XF is set to be just as diverse, with a 161bhp 2.0-litre diesel looking to be the best seller. On the other end of the spectrum, the 375bhp 3.0-litre F-Type V6 will be used, and you can of course expect an ‘R’ model in the near future, which will satisfy those with an appetite for unashamed speed, noise and petrol station visits.
