A gentleman’s guide to Autumn trends

‘Fashions fade, style is eternal’. These were the great words of Yves Saint Laurent and they hold true for us here at The Gentleman’s Journal. We don’t like to play slave to trends but we must admit that it’s important to at least acknowledge them if we are to evolve our own personal style. In light of this, be sure to read on to discover the autumn style trends that get our seal of approval – they’re all extremely wearable and can easily be applied to your wardrobe.

DOUBLE BREASTED TAILORING, , The Double-breasted suit has seen a real resurgence in recent times, but now it looks like it’s well and truly here to stay. It’s a stately alternative to its single breasted cousin but be warned that it can go easily wrong. Make sure you keep it trim through the body and arms, which will flatter your body shape, rather than drown it.

CHECK PATTERNS, , As seen in the Ede & Ravenscroft, Hackett and Hardy Amies AW14 collections, check-patterned garments are set to be very popular indeed. They are of course nothing new, but implement them well and you’ll infuse a dandy element to your smart or casual attire. These trousers are formal by nature and will add a quirky twist when paired with a navy blazer, but they’ll also work in more laid-back surroundings with an oxford shirt and a cardigan.

ROLLNECKS, , This is another trend that has gained momentum over the last couple of winters, but of course us gentlemen know that the rollneck has always been a wardrobe essential. For autumn, find one in a lighter weight like this cashmere example by British heritage brand, Aquascutum.

BOLD OVERCOATS, , This autumn we’ll be seeing a move towards overcoats with a longer length, such as this single-breasted, three-button wool piece. These do of course have formal connotations and as such are perfect for throwing over your suit when the weather turns sour.

GREENS, , Green is set to be the colour for autumn, and this is a good thing, given that it’s so easy to integrate into your existing wardrobe. The inspiration behind this are the military looks that were being pushed on the catwalks, but all you have to do is swap out your usual navys and blacks if you want to salute this trend.
