The summer shoes you should be wearing

"Invest in your shoes and your sheets because if you’re not in one, you’re in the other."

A true gentleman will recall the old saying: “Invest in your shoes and your sheets because if you’re not in one, you’re in the other”. And, with summer well underway and your travel plans in place, you’re not truly ready to face the summer in style, until you’ve invested in comfortable, lightweight shoes.

And, to help you craft the ultimate closet, with our curation of summer-ready shoes; from the best loafers on the market right now, to the driving shoes worn by 007 himself. So which pair do have your feet set on?

Put pedal to the metal in the right driving shoes

Nothing says ‘I own a vintage Italian sports car’ like a pair of driving shoes. These leather, or suede rubber-soled moccasins were invented over seventy years ago — created to give serious Sunday drivers extra grip when hooning their low-slung Alfas or fiercely red Ferraris around country lanes.

Today, the driving shoe is less practical and more of a status symbol. From investment bankers sunning themselves on the Riviera to fashionistas sashaying their way across the cobbles of Milan, it may pay to have a Maserati parked up around the corner — but don’t feel you need the wheels to slip on a pair.

And, if you’re really looking to earn some extra bragging rights, Crockett & Jones supplied pairs of their beautiful shoes for Daniel Craig in Spectre and Skyfall.

Slip on a pair of loafers

During the hotter months, when all we really want to do is strip down to our swim shorts and lounge in the sun, dressing for formal occasions can be a drag. No-one really wants to wear a three-piece when its 30 degrees, after all. But when it comes to shoes, it’s a different matter entirely.

The loafer is the perfect formal summer shoe. Originally developed over 150 years ago for the royal family, these slip-on shoes are crafted in leather, occasionally decorated and a key part of the mid-century “Ivy Look”. And you should own at least one pair. These are a few of our favourites.
