It’s time to face it, gents: winter is well and truly upon us. It’s time to pack away those summer shirts and change your order from a classic spritz for a warming glass of Scotch whisky. And here at Gentleman’s Journal, we are determined to rejoice at this changing of the seasons — after all, it gives us plenty of excuses to cancel plans and catch up on all the Netflix shows we’ve been pretending we’ve watched all year.
And, as you pack up your summer essentials for another year, it’s imperative that you’re well prepared for the cold, dark days ahead. With this in mind, we’ve rounded up our favourite jumpers on the market this season, that promise to keep you looking good while you’re keeping warm.
Best cashmere: Luca Faloni Chunky Knit Cashmere Crew Neck
We make no secret of our sincere love for Luca Faloni’s clothing. When we aren’t coveting the brand’s cooling silk-blend offerings in the summer months, we’re reaching for their famous cashmere creations to see us through the winter in style. To this end, our personal favourite design has to be this classic crew neck.
Knitted in Northern Italy using 100% four-ply cashmere from the prestigious Cariaggi Fine Yarns Collection, the fit is slightly more relaxed than Luca Faloni’s other knitwear designs. Luxuriously soft, it features a classic crew neckline for a timeless casual look.

Best woollen jumper: Barbour New Tyne Crew
Shooting season is here, and as the temperatures plunge to ever-more punishing depths, you’ll need to layer up your woollen staples before heading to your favourite ground.
Designed in a classic sporting style, this winter knit is made using a chunky texture that calls to mind the traditional fisherman’s jumper. Featuring a crew neck, durable rib stitching, and a subtle Barbour flag label to the side seam — this is a stylish jumper which has been built to last. Ideal for layering over shirts and under your favourite Barbour jacket for additional warmth.

Best rollneck: John Smedley Cherwell Slim-Fit Merino Wool Rollneck Sweater
John Smedley men’s knitwear has been designed and manufactured in Derbyshire, England, for over 200 years. Quality is everything for the firm: the premium merino wool comes from New Zealand and fine Sea Island cotton has been a mainstay of the company since 1922.
We’ve always been fans of the brand’s classic ‘Cherwell’ sweater, but this camel shade might be our new favourite. Both smart and versatile, it’s spun from lightweight and temperature-regulating merino wool and topped with a cosy ribbed rollneck.

Best patterned jumper: Mr P. Striped Virgin Wool Rollneck Sweater
The Breton stripe top might be considered a fairly standard-issue design – straightforward white interspersed with blue stripes – but its history and associations are long and varied. First introduced in 1858 as the uniform for all navy seamen in Northern France, the original featured 21 stripes (one for each of Napoleon Bonaparte’s victories).
The design also served a practical function, since the distinctive stripes made it easier to spot wayward sailors who had fallen overboard. From those functional beginnings, it’s become a wardrobe mainstay all year round. And, for the perfect winter option, this Mr P. design is knitted from navy and ecru virgin wool – promising to keep you toasty as the mercury drops.
