Apps of the week: 03/12/14

Every week The Gentleman’s Journal will endeavour to bring you news of the newest, hottest and lesser known apps around. Here are the apps of the week.

STRAW – FREE ON IOS, ANDROID AND WINDOWS

TGJ – 51-3a

Straw has been making headlines in the digital world recently because it has finally been released on iOS. Traditionally the App Store has put the Google Play and others to shame with its array of apps, but Straw was one that got away from them. The app basically allows you to create and share a poll with your friends, a specialised group, or the public – who will then vote on the question you’ve proffered.

YUMMLY – FREE ON IOS AND ANDROID

TGJ – 51-4a

This is the ultimate app for foodies and has recently been updated to make it easier to use during the cooking process. It has thousands upon thousands of recipes – but it has so much more to offer than just cooking guidelines. You can set taste preferences, scan food at the supermarket to see what it goes with and add a range of filters including; cooking times, diets, allergies and cuisines.

NEXT GLASS – FREE ON IOS AND ANDROID

TGJ – 51-5a

Next Glass is the ultimate app for connoisseurs of wine and beer. You simply download the app and build your ‘taste profile’, entering beers and wines you like into the app. Next Glass will then start giving you personalised recommendations of beers and wines similar to the ones that you’ve liked. It’s all done very scientifically – the app actually analyses the molecular chemistry of the drinks you like and makes recommendations accordingly. All in all, pretty amazing stuff.
