App of the Week: Sleep Cycle

Waking up after a poor night’s sleep is possibly the worst feeling in the world, topped only by a poor night’s sleep and a whisky too many the night before. Northcube’s Sleep Cycle app, is offering a potential fix, that’s the grogginess of a bad night’s sleep, not the hangover, unfortunately.

Sleep Cycle is an alarm clock replacement. The app works by tracking your movement through your iPhone’s accelerometer. Through this it can establish what stage of sleep you are currently in, light, deep or dream state – REM (rapid eye movement sleep) – and wakes you when you’re at the lightest phase of sleep.

Essentially, the app will alleviate those bleary mornings by helping avoid you being woken during the deepest phases of your sleep.

The alarm will track 30 minutes before the time you’ve set, stirring you when you’re in your lightest sleep, giving you the best possible start to the day. Sleep Cycle will also track your sleep, ready for you to review later on. There’s also the function for you to make notes on the night, i.e. how much coffee, alcohol, food etc. you had before bed; allowing you to analyse the effect it had on your sleep.

The downside? One small one, you’ll be sleeping with your iPhone for the foreseeable.
