How to wear trainers like a gentleman

With LC:M having recently finished, one of the highlights of the event was the inimitable Tom Ford stunning everyone with his AW15 presentation. The ’60s-esque collection was true to form for Ford as he continued to lay claim to his position at the zenith of men’s fashion.

One notable inclusion, for the second winter season running, was that of trainers or ‘tennis shoes’. Last year Ford stated, “When I started this company I swore I would never make tennis shoes. However when I found a way to make them look like ‘us’, I changed my mind.”

So it’s safe to say trainers are no longer solely the reserve of the gym. That said, the styling has to be perfectly nailed for them to compliment a Gentleman’s look; smart and chic that is. Take your lead from Ford himself to make them work for you.

Keeping things simple is the first step, leave the bold branding on the shelf. Opt for something pared back and minimalist – a number of high-end, luxury labels are doing this, think Lanvin, Tom Ford and Common Projects for starters.

Sidestep the riskier colour combinations in favour of a muted palette. Save the brighter hues for working out and not for finishing your off-duty ensembles; a neutral is far more versatile, giving you a wider range of options as well as working in a more timeless manner.

Last but not least, just because you’re wearing trainers, it doesn’t mean the rest of your outfit should consist of slovenly sportswear. Dress up your casual footwear, pairing them with slim, tailored trousers and some well fitting knitwear. Think of your new trainers as an alterative to your penny loafers or casual brogues and treat them as nothing less.
