Watchout: Nomos Lamda 39mm

Nomos are one of the newest brands to come out of Glashutte, the famous German watchmaking town, and they’re also one of the best. Specialising in minimalistic design – you only have to visit their website to see that – they’ve achieved a hell of a lot in a short space of time. The Lamda isn’t a new watch for the brand, but it now comes with a 39mm case, and this is worth celebrating.

Established in 1990, around the same time that the iconic A. Lange & Sohne returned from the grave, Nomos had what some might call an uphill battle. They’ve well and truly triumphed though, creating their very own niche in the notoriously competitive industry. The fact that they produce their own in-house calibers attests to this, an all the more impressive feat considering that only 20 companies in the world do the same and that they’ve only been in the game for 26 years.

Nomos’ Lamda watch lies at the top end of their extensive range, which contains no less than 11 models. Conceived in 2013, it’s available only in 18k white or rose gold, and comes with a unique, award-winning design. It was only available with a 42mm case, until now.

The new 39mm Nomos Lamda is, in the pictures at least, identical to its older, larger brother. It features the same in-house caliber movement too, but its size will likely make it remarkably different in the metal and on the wrist. There’s been a recent move back to the ways of old in horology, as more and more watches are cropping up in smaller sizes. Traditionally, gent’s watches would be available from around 35mm-38mm, so with Nomos releasing their flagship model in 39mm, they’re subtly nodding to the past. Bravo, we say.
