5 places to ski before you die

To most, a ski holiday is characterised by good company, fine food, and après-ski bars, with time hitting the slopes as just a detail. But to others, the opportunity to test technical skill and fundamental bravery over some of the toughest challenges the mountains have to offer is simply irresistible. Whether you’re on a mission to conquer legendary pistes, willing to swap the ski-lift for the empty, luxurious powder of ski touring, or are seeking the challenge of navigating through your way down from the most isolated peaks, here are 5 top destinations for any gentleman wanting to get that bit more out of a week on the slopes.

1. La Chavanette, Portes de Soleil

wall

More commonly, and imposingly, known as ‘The Swiss Wall’. In tackling this ski fanatic magnet you not only confront nightmarish moguls (beware if you take the plunge over the edge when snow is lacking), but you ski your way across the border into Switzerland. Take the chairlift up from the Swiss side prior to skiing the wall and get a birds-eye view of those already on the wall, the perfect way to gain some last minute technique inspiration. An absolute must for any Alpine enthusiast.

2. Ski Touring, Norway

Breathtaking views, vast untouched powder slopes and an entirely unforgettable skiing experience. All well and truly earned by the climb. Boat rides across icy waters allow the chance to eye up the climb ahead, and hikes up through sheltered trees followed by bleak snowscapes, before the long way down from the empty summit to the shore. Not for the faint-hearted, or the unfit, but the perfect choice for those wanting an alternative way to ski.

3. La Chimenea, La Parva, Chile

Take a trip below the equator for a summer ski escape (the best times for powder are July, August and early September) and head to La Parva, just 2 hours north of Santiago and considered by many as the best skiing in Chile. At the top of La Chimenea prepare yourself for the descent with distant views of Santiago skyscrapers before making your way down this rocky couloir. Whilst in La Parva, give night skiing a go as well.

4. Backside Mont Fort, Verbier, Switzerland

No list of skiing destinations can really be called complete without some mention of Verbier, and for many no trip to Verbier is complete without an expedition up Mont Fort. Guides are recommended for this king of all off-piste terrains, which give steep, backcountry skiing a whole new, unforgettable perspective.

5. Nevis Range, Scotland

Whilst Britain is far from the most obvious destination for those pursuing a must-ski experience, this is certainly one any gentleman should have in his repertoire of conquered slopes. Far from the perhaps images conjured up by the suggestion of skiing in Scotland, namely poor snow and even worse weather, head off in February or March for far more intrepid, challenging off-piste skiing than first impressions would have you believe.
