The code that will kill the postcode

You know the feeling… you tap a postcode into your sat nav and, after negotiating the dodgy accent and patronising instructions, you’re spat out in vaguely the right area, but not quite at the destination you were actually aiming for. There’s a simple reason for this.

There are some 29 million addresses in the UK, but only 1.8 million postcodes, meaning that 10-15% of these are totally inaccurate. Little wonder then that we spend so much time lost on country lanes, going the wrong direction down one-way streets and feeling the wrath of road rage boiling within. It’s one of life’s sordid banes. This is why we spend so much time wondering what the hell has happened to our eBay or Amazon order…

Cue Locpin, a 6-character code location-based technology innovation that can pinpoint any location on the planet, with the aim of bringing about “the death of the postcode”. Considering I spent most of Saturday morning stuck in traffic after a sat nav glitch, they have my attention. Backed by Fat Face investor Clive Beharell, Locpin promises to be the first accurate solution for both consumers and businesses, creating up to 2 billion address codes per country for permanent and temporary locations, which means that any given location can now be attributed an address. No more postcode sharing. No more retrieving lost parcels from the neighbours.

“It’s a simple idea,” explains Guy Davenport, co-founder and director, “and is set to improve the accuracy of delivery dramatically. We’re really excited to be launching our software. Locpin is one of those ideas that catch on fast and we expect it to become an integral part of any address before long.”

Sounding too good to be true, I logged in myself. Two minutes later I had my own code, which, much like my fingerprints, was the only one in existence. Mine and mine only. And it gets better, as if and when I move, my code moves with me – I simply log into my account and alter the address. This then means that when ordering online, I don’t have to reel off a full five-line address, or worry about how many third parties are prying on my details. I type in one code and then sit back as my parcel makes a beeline for my house, and not via half the street first. With nearly 1 in 10 first-time delivery failures in the UK alone, the ability to accurately pinpoint any location, rural or urban, is essential to get that package delivered on time. Folk in the most desolate areas of Wales, the Scottish Highlands and the Lake District will be delighted.

“In today’s marketplace of increasing consumer expectations,” says Clive, “people want more accuracy, security and control over their personal data and they want it in an easy-to-use format. Locpin does this and brings us one step closer to the future of on-time, first-time delivery – not just here in the UK, but on a global scale.”
