Introducing: Tesla Model D

Elon Musk of Tesla Motors has introduced the Tesla Model D, which was rapturously received by the trade press and adherents of the electric car manufacturer’s philosophy. Essentially the Tesla D is simply a four wheel drive version of the Tesla S – with a few fun additions.

The Tesla D’s speed is the thing that really sets it apart from the Tesla S, which went from 0 to 60 mph in a respectable – but unremarkable – 5.1 seconds. The most powerful version of the Tesla D, the P85D, on the other hand, does 0 to 60 in a blistering 3.2 seconds, acceleration that the manufacturers of Italian sports cars would be proud of and this, remember, is still a saloon. Oh yeah, and it has 682bhp.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about the car is its driver-assist embellishments. Though it would perhaps be be overhyping the Tesla D to say that it had an ‘autopilot’ system, it does have a range of driver-assist features; including the ability to read and react to road signs and it can also change lanes if the need to do so arises. The Tesla D might not be the exciting new release fans and anoraks were hoping for – but this new souped up version of the Tesla S will surely prove to be the coolest – and quickest – saloon around for the next year.
