The most extreme travel destinations the world has to offer

Is sightseeing, cocktails and relaxation enough to satisfy you next trip abroad, gentlemen? Or will you go the extra mile? Take a look at some of the most extreme travel destinations the world has to offer.

1. The closest to outer space you can reach by foot

You might have assumed that Everest, as the world’s tallest mountain, would take this title, but due its position on the earth’s surface the peak of Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador is the furthest pace from the centre of the earth. With several routes for climbers, and standing at over 20,000 feet, will this be one to add to your bucket list gentlemen?

2. The coldest continent

The last place on earth to be explored, and also the driest continent, Antarctica is a true demonstration of an extreme environment. Whether you journey below the Antarctic Circle or are up to an expedition all the way to the South Pole, you are guaranteed a truly extraordinary experience. Take inspiration from the Endurance South Pole 100 Expedition led by David Hempleman-Adams, setting out this winter to walk the last 100 miles.

3. The driest place on earth

Atacama

Scientists have compared the soil in the Atacama Desert to that on Mars, and with not a single drop or rain falling from October 1903 to January 1913 the area boasts the longest period without rain ever recorded. This other-worldly landscape is well worth a trip.

4. Leap into an active volcano

villarica volcano

This style of bungee jumping wouldn’t be for everyone. Villarica, near Pucon, Chile, is one of only five volcanoes in the world known to have active lava within its crater. Jump to within 200 metres of molten lava before travelling over 100km suspended below the helicopter. Tempted, Gentlemen?

5. Cycle the world’s most dangerous road

death-road-bolivia

64km of the ultimate adrenaline rush. Cycling down ‘Death Road’ in Bolivia will take you from snow all the way down to the steaming Amazon jungle, on a single track road with a sheer cliff face on one side, this is downhill cycling at its most extreme.

6. Get close to Iguazu Falls

iguazu falls

Taller than and twice as wide as Niagra. If simply admiring the magnificent Iguazu falls from viewpoint or helicopter isn’t enough for you, take the more adventurous option of a boat ride into the heart of the falls. The waterfalls can be accessed from Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, so there’s very little excuse no to visit.

7. Swim with Sharks

A large Lemon Shark gulps down a large tuna head in front of a crowd of divers.

Head to Beqa Island in Chile for an unparalleled shark diving experience in the Shark Reef Marine Reserve. Forget the idea of cages and swim with up to 8 species of feeding sharks, on what has been called the ‘Best Shark Dive in the World’. Another one only for the most intrepid among you, Gentlemen.
