The Most Expensive Coffees In The World

A daily staple for us all, the world of coffee is far more complex than that tub of instant sitting in your kitchen. Luxury coffees are an exclusive business and just a mere cup can present a fix far more expensive than even the most dependent caffeine addict’s daily dose. These are five blends that will put your instant to shame and then some…

With a storied history – Napoleon has been credited for its popularity – the beans take their name from the small island in the South Atlantic where they’re produced. At just under $80 dollars per lb, the semi-translucent green bean has fruity almost citrus notes and a caramel-like tang. They’re subject to some rigorous quality control to ensure only the absolute finest is sold.

HACIENDA LA ESMERALDA

Hailing from Panama, Hacienda La Esmeralda coffee is at the height of luxury and exclusivity. Aromatically floral and sweet to taste, it’s sold via yearly auctions the bean have reached heights of $350 dollars a pound; a sample set of the variety of blends prior to the auctions sells at $250 dollars alone.

KOPI LUWAK

One that coffee aficionados are sure to be aware of, Kopi Luwak is produced from beans that have passed through a civet cat’s digestive system, yes seriously. Selling for as much as $80 per cup, the bean has a disgusting charm that has intrigued coffee lovers for a few years now. While the trade has been marred somewhat through unscrupulous methods and fraudulent practise, true Kopi Luwak is a must for any man serious about his roast.

BLACK IVORY

Equally as repulsive in its production methods as Kopi Luwak, although instead of being produced in the innards of an exotic cat, it’s passed through elephants instead; fortunately the beans are washed before they’re brewed. Bitterless in taste, the coffee is highly limited and produced by only one elephant refuge in Thailand. The exclusivity puts the price tag at somewhere close to $50 dollars for a single cup.

FINCA EL INJERTO

The award winning Guatemalan bean has previously fetched the highest price per pound of coffee ever, just over $500 dollars, really. The beans are closely associated with the Geisha of Hacienda La Esmeralda and their distinctively pretty bouquet was initially regarded somewhat of a fluke, although it’s now regarded as one of, if not the, finest coffee in the world.
