Drive de Cartier: for the man who seeks adventure

There are few greater feelings than that of a road trip. The sense of total freedom, miles upon miles of tarmac stretching ahead of you, scenic routes of unspoiled beauty – a ribbon draped across mountains, deserts, moors and along coasts. The escapism seems never ending when fuelled by a throttle – one can drive and drive, until the sun sets and the sky turns inky. The world is a large place, and a car is the perfect way to explore its nooks and crannies – as it was before the jet turned the atlas in a tube map.

Whether bumping through thick African bush or burning down Route 66 in a convertible, memories are made on the move. The man who takes a road trip isn’t looking for bragging rights, he wants new experiences and adventure. The same can be said for his style, mannerisms and sense of freedom. A man with an itch for wanderlust is more often than not an interesting character, equally intrigued by the stories of others. He keeps a journal of the people he meets, the sights that have left him speechless, the women he will miss, the moments that make sense despite being far too big to comprehend, the calm evenings that give clarity where once there was confusion.

It is this man who Cartier are targeting with the Drive de Cartier. A man of passion. A man who understands craft and the meaning behind objects. The iconic brand have long had a reputation for developing timepieces that not only have a unique quality to them, but represent so much more than appearance to the wearer.

Unveiled at this year’s SIHH in Geneva, and so called the Drive watch because it has taken its inspiration from a classic car, it aims to capture instinct, independence and elegance. The patterning of the guilloché dial resembles the design of a radiator grill, the domed crystal, counter at 6 o’clock and the winding crown shaped like a bolt, the motor car is an indisputable presence. Naturally, it is a great looking watch.

The case is available in pink gold or steel, the dial is marked by Roman numerals punctuated with sword-shaped hands, and the transparent case-back reveals the Manufacture movement 1904 MC. It is a fine example of a watch created in accordance with the most prestigious off all watchmaker certifications.

The Drive de Cartier has an elegant masculinity to it. Striking yet never gaudy, it hints at power and authority, but never arrogance. This is a watch for the Drive man. His style and detail is considered and meaningful. His next adventure always just around the corner.
