CARS – Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept

New Car - TGJ.01

Land Rover bin the bulky, slab sided silhouette that has marked the Discovery series since its birth 25 years ago, and usher in a new, sleeker and sportier profile in the form of the Discovery Vision Concept.

The bold new look not only hints at the future design of the family-friendly off-roader, but also represents a new ‘Discovery’ arm of the Land Rover brand to sit in between the Range Rover family and Defender (expected in 2016). However, don’t go running down to the showroom clutching your cash just yet, because the Discovery Vision Concept is a combination of the seven-seat and the smaller five-seat version says Land Rover Design Director, Gerry McGovern.

Sporting design elements familiar to the Range Rover series, the profiled corners and wraparound lights reduce the Discovery’s former bulky, can-do profile to something that promises to be a little more entertaining on the daily commute. With more gadgetry on board than the Star Trek Enterprise, such as ‘Smart Glass,’ which can establish your location by scanning your eye movements over a unique landmark, the Discovery Vision Concept demonstrates the kind of technology that’ll hopefully be commonplace in Land Rovers soon. In the meantime, you’ll have to make do with the latest Terrain Response System, which uses lasers to scan the road ahead and set-up the Land Rover accordingly, sorry.

With no murmurings of price and engine specs ahead of its launch at the New York motor show between 16th and 27th April, the first version of the Disco to go on sale will be the five-seat model, which will replace the Freelander in Summer 2014. Watch this space.
