The cardinal sins of summer dressing

It’s infinitely easier to dress well during the winter months as opposed to the summer. A solid piece of outerwear elevates a look in an instant, it can hide a less than perfect shirt, a bit of knitwear that’s bobbling at the bottom or a slightly expanded waistline. The rising mercury doesn’t permit such sartorial allowances. While sticky temperatures necessitate the need for comfort, there’s no reason you can’t see the season out in style and not falling foul of these faux pas will help immeasurably in that endeavour.

White socks

Unless you’re on the tennis court or in the gym, avoid white socks at all costs — despite current fashion dictate. The contrast is awful against most other colours and the fact that they’re inherently sportswear doesn’t help either; it’s just a sloppy style move, regardless.

The fix:

No-show socks are a great option if you want to indulge in a touch of ankle bearing. If that’s a bit laissez-faire for your tastes and you’re firmly in the camp that vehemently loathes a flash of flesh between hem and shoe then opt for a darker colour sock in a lightweight cotton or linen. Just anything but white, please.
