WATCHES – A WHOLE NEW CALIBRE DE CARTIER

I’m a big fan of functional art – the innovative designs where style and beauty hasn’t had to give way to an obsession over mechanics and performance, and vice-versa. The Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato – eye wateringly handsome, but not all out of ideas when shown a corner at speed. A pair of Boss & Co. over-under shotguns – perfect exhibit pieces or collector’s gems, but also flawless when put to use in the field. Finding the balance is an exquisite niche.

Another area of manufacture that can boast detaining this meticulous attention to detail and form is wristwatches. The big names – Breitling, Rolex, Cartier, etc. – get the nod of approval in regards to functional art. A quick flick onto their websites instantly smacks you with an eclectic range of timepieces that are painfully pretty, while also employing cutting-edge technology.

The Calibre de Cartier Diver range, labeled as authentic diving instruments, falls well into this bracket, as in addition to the expected looks and function, it has a party trick in the way of water resistance to 300 metres. So… striking, top quality, and waterproof – it’s a strong repertoire.

Other specs of note are its rubber strap, maximum-precision unidirectional turning bezel coated with ADLC, time-control displays in Super-LumiNova and 1904 MC movement. Basically, Cartier, as they have been doing since the company was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, are continuing to push the boundaries of engineering.

The Aston Zagato and pair of Boss guns are in good company.
