BUSINESS – 7 TIPS TO HELP YOU GET A LIFE

, So you may be very successful in life, but do you actually have a life? A life that doesn’t revolve around emails, phone calls, meetings, late night shifts and spread sheets? It’s an interesting thought. Can it be that those who are so transfixed on making money run out of time, energy and enthusiasm when it comes to spending it?

Family, friends, holidays and health all too easily disintegrate like paper in the rain when the prospect of another booming deal is on the brink of close. You’ll only realise you went a little full bore when in your geriatric years, counting the number of ex-wives you’ve had and when the last time was you made contact with your son.

But the two can sit hand-in-hand. Here are some of The Gentleman’s Journal’s tips concerning how to enjoy the finer things in life while being successful in business.

1. HAVE TRUST , Have a decent team around you. Surrounding yourself with the right people can lift a hefty portion of the weight and responsibility hanging around your neck.

2. MANAGE YOUR TIME , Don’t have time for anything other than business? Make time. Cue a cliché… life really is too short to spend every inch of your day, year and life stalwart in your dedication to work.

3. TAKE EXERCISE , Finding the time to keep fit and healthy can be an aching chore in itself, but it’s a great way to clear your head and wind down after a hectic day in the office.

4. BOOK HOLIDAYS, I’m talking about an actual holiday, not a business trip where you might be able to squeeze in supper with your wife between meetings. Always make time to go away and separate yourself from the suited and booted routine. And while on the beach, don’t be the man who complains about the lack of Wifi and phone reception, or that the sun’s glare is making your laptop screen illegible.

5. REMEMBER FAMILY, Should be an obvious one, but judging by the soaring rate of multi-million pound divorce settlements – much to the delight of The Daily Mail – the importance of prioritising your nearest and dearest is clearly falling by the wayside. Family shouldn’t play second fiddle to your job. You don’t want to become a mere Skype figure to your children, and your wife shouldn’t have to ferret for days in your diary, which, incidentally, has become as complex as the assembly instructions for a nuclear device.

6. FIND HOBBIES , Keeps you stimulated, in touch with friends, and ensures you have more to talk about at dinner parties than the deal you nailed that morning with the CEO of YAWN & BORED.

7. DON’T OVERCOMMIT, A sure fire way to tire yourself out mentally and physically. Work within your means rather than exerting your body and mind to extremes. Careers are marathons, not sprints.
