Blancpain’s latest diving watch

Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms series of diving watches is in short, legendary. It’s widely believed to be the first ‘modern’ dive watch, produced before even the fabled Rolex Submariner and Omega Seamaster. This iteration, the tongue twisting Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe ocean Commitment, is the latest in a long line of greats, and we’re rather taken by it.

The original Fifty Fathoms was conceived for the Navy SEALS of France, who needed a reliable timepiece they could conduct underwater operations with. It was issued back in 1953 as a simple, time-only piece, yet it proved to be a success and later versions proved popular with civilians as a result. It should be noted that the Bathyscaphe was originally designed as a separate entity to the Fifty Fathoms series, yet over the years the two were developed in unison. What you see before you is a marriage of the heritage and technology behind the two lines rolled into one, and the results are impressive. After all, things born out of function always have a certain charm to them, and the new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Ocean Commitment has it in droves.

Limited to a run of just 250 watches, the Bathyscaphe is a rare beast. It features a striking all-blue frontage as well as a matching fabric strap, and the noteworthy elements don’t stop there. The case is constructed from a matte grey ceramic, which is lighter than steel and just as tough as titanium. This gives the piece an exotic edge, and with its chronograph and subtle date window, the combination is a winning one.
