Royal Ascot Style Dos and Don’ts

Ignoring the racing for a second, every year the Royal Ascot is a sophisticated display of extravagant dress from both sexes. Ladies go all out in their dresses and headpieces and gents display their dominance in fine tailored suits and dress shoes. An event defined by its tradition and heritage, the Royal Ascot is a real chance to demonstrate your sartorial prowess, so take up the challenge and raise your game. There is, of course, plenty of opportunity to get it wrong though, so we thought we’d take a look at the Royal Ascot style dos and don’ts, and where you can go wrong.

FORMAL, , Those attending the Royal Enclosure must adhere to a strict dress code of black or grey morning dress, which must include a waistcoat and tie and a black or grey top hat. Black shoes must also be worn, so we’d recommend patent leather oxfords or toe cap derbies. Given that it’s an incredibly formal affair, you should keep accessorising to a minimum as colourful additions to your outfit may well be frowned upon.

SMART, , Grandstand admission racegoers have much more freedom with their dress, therefore creativity, colour and individualism is the order of the day. Those with grandstand admission can choose to follow the dress code of the Royal Enclosure but they are only ‘required to wear a suit with a shirt and tie’. This loose dress code means that you can really push the boat out, but as it’s easy to get carried away you should avoid anything too garish, as after all, you want to maintain the appearance of a well put together gentleman.

SMART CASUAL, , Whilst those in the Silver Ring or Heath Enclosures have no formal dress code to speak of, it’s important to remember your surroundings. Smart-casual attire in the form of blazers, tailored trousers and oxford shirts are perfect, and just because there isn’t a dress code as such, that doesn’t mean you can get away with novelty or fancy dress attire, as this is strictly off-limits.
