Everything you need to know about the Seiko Prospex Blue Lagoon

Seiko's latest limited edition timepiece is a bolt from the blue

Last year, Seiko’s new take on their vintage ‘Turtle’ diving watch made quite the splash. And, with its cushion case and 200 metre water resistance, it’s easy to see why this perfect pairing of style and technical reliability proved so popular.

The Japanese watchmaker has recently revealed a new pair of limited edition timepieces, which will be shown as part of Seiko’s exhibit at Baselworld 2017. One of the two new blue-tinged watches is a variation on the existing ‘Samurai’ model, but our favourite at the Gentleman’s Journal is Seiko’s new take on the Prospex ‘Turtle’.

Like the PADI variation launched in 2016 – featuring the classic red and blue colours of the divers’ association – this newest iteration of the ‘Turtle’ sees two colours on the bezel. However, this time – and in honour of the Blue Lagoon – both colours are hues of blue.

A deep blue and light turquoise feature on the rotatable bezel, and the dial – in a slightly different blue – retains the sub-ray pattern of the original model that plays with ambient light in a way we love.

The same 45mm ‘Turtle’ case, steel bracelet and unbreakable in-house calibre 4R36 with day and date feature remain the same as the base model, but that’s really not what the Blue Lagoon limited edition is about – and nor should it be. We know how technically dependable the ‘Turtle’ is, so this limited run is all about the blues – visually making it a must have for collector.

We’ve had no word yet about limitations, but we expect they’ll sell fast when released to the public. And even though the subtler colour scheme may lack the iconic look of the PADI edition’s red and blue ‘Pepsi’ bezel – so named for the soft drink company’s colour scheme – we think that the cooler, more restrained style of the Lagoon ‘Turtle’ will leave you feeling anything but blue.

The SRPB11 and SRPB09 will be available for purchase in early February.
