Introducing: Apple iPad Air 2

Falling in line with their usual annual unveilings, Apple have announced the latest incarnation to their tablet family; the iPad Air 2. Thinner, lighter and faster – all the usual buzzwords apply. Some innovations have been brought to the table though, meaning you may actually want to part with your hard-earned cash, should you be in the market for a high-end tablet.

The previous iPad Air lived up to its name. It was thin, it was light, and on occasion you’d almost forget that it was there. The new generation takes this notion to all new levels though, as it’s 6.1mm thin and weighs just 437 grams. This means you can surf the web, make FaceTime calls and play games with minimal effort, for an experience that defies what you might think possible with such a device.

The first of the iPad Air 2’s real innovations though, is the screen. Now made of just one layer rather than three, it boasts brighter colours and a larger contrast between the blacks and whites, making it the LED TV of the tablet universe. It also features a anti-reflective coating, similar to what you’ll find on luxury watches, that makes it easier to view than ever. Its 9.7-inch display has a resolution of 2048×1536 as well as 264 pixels per inch.

The iPad Air 2 is also powerful. So powerful in fact that actually rivals many desktop computers with its 64-bit A8X processor. Its graphics are two and a half times faster than the original Air, and its CPU is 40% faster overall. And all of this with a mammoth 10-hour batter life – it’s quite impressive indeed.

The biggest talking point though is that Apple’s lauded Touch ID technology is making a much-needed appearance. It arguably should have debuted last time around, but now tablet users will no longer have to type out their passwords when awakening their device or making purchases. Both the front and tea-facing cameras have been vastly improved too, although we still question the credibility of people who use these other than for FaceTime calls.

The iPad Air 2 costs from £399. For more information, click here.
