Everything you need to know about Formula E

From September 2014, Formula E will attempt to change the world of motorsport forever. The world’s first fully electric racing series, Formula E is set to be an exciting spectacle, not least because the cars look like they’ve come from another planet. Although the driver line up hasn’t yet been finalised, a number of big name drivers have already been signed up, which should make for some very exciting, competitive racing throughout the season.

THE CARS, , Renault will produce every vehicle in the first year of the championship, meaning that every car will boast the same power output, top speed and acceleration. Giving the grid an even playing field, this will ensure that driving skill will stand out, which should provide plenty of nail biting overtaking action.

Performance wise, the cars boast a 0-62mph time of 3 seconds and a top speed of 140mph. Interestingly though, the car’s power will vary. In practice and qualifying the full 270bhp will be available. However, this will be cut down to 180bhp during race to save energy, although a power boost is available via a ‘push to pass’ button.

THE TECHNOLOGY , , Governed by the FIA, the sport is all about pushing the boundaries of technology in the most cost effective way. The materials used to build the car will be of very high quality, but use of the most expensive carbon fibres will be limited, to save money. Sound-wise, the electric powertrains create a unique whooshing sound that is expected to reach 80 decibels, more than an average road car.

The cars will be essential in furthering the development of electric systems for road cars and it’s widely believed that they represent the future of motorsport, so whether we like them or not we better get used to them.

THE DRIVERS, , Formula E is no passing trend. If you want proof that the sport is here to stay then look no further than its impressive line up of drivers, which includes ex-F1 stars Bruno Senna, Lucas di Grassi, Karun Chandhok, Jarno Trulli, Nick Heidfeld and Jaime Alguersuari.

THE LOCATIONS , , A truly worldwide affair, Formula E will pitch its tent in 10 of the world’s most vibrant cities. Races will take place in Beijing, Malaysia, Uruguay, Buenos Aires, Miami, Long Beach, Monte Carlo, Berlin and London.

THE RULES, , There are some interesting rules that make up Formula E. Practice, qualifying and the race will occur on the same day, which will be a treat for the spectator, but likely rather challenging for the driver. Each car’s battery will run out mid-race, so every driver will be assigned two cars – the second of which will be fully charged, ready for the driver to jump in to on a pit stop. There are a total of 10 teams competing in the championship, with two drivers per team, meaning each team has four cars in total.
