The best dressed men at 2017’s awards season so far

The gentlemen who have shone the brightest this year so far

This time of year is always equally as exciting for film and fashion enthusiasts alike. Critically-acclaimed films get their well-deserved recognition and modern-day style icons arise from the winter gloom in all of their much-appreciated glory. So far, the big names have been out at the Grammys, the Golden Globes, the SAG awards and the BAFTAs. Who won in the style stakes?

Two gentlemen that are rarely off the mark when it comes to style are Gosling and Redmayne. These guys both top pretty much every best-dressed list that comes their way – dressing in a tux is a walk in the park for these guys. Here, they’ve both gone classic with a modern edge: Gosling in his white tux is a nod to his character in La La Land and the influence that the jazz gentlemen of the past had on his style, and Redmayne experiments (with great success) with the wider (and often avoided) lapel.

As one of the year’s most successful producers and DJs with access to some of the greatest talents in the world, you’d expect Ricci Riera’s wardrobe to be as eclectic as the songs he produces – and that it is. He stood out head and shoulders above anyone else at this year’s Grammy award by updating the classic tux with a modern – and urban – edge. If there’s an occasion worth dressing up for, but you aren’t expected to wear a tuxedo, take note from Riera and go for a slim-cut suit and an open neck shirt. You won’t regret it.

Sure, Hiddleston may not have covered himself is sartorial glory when he chose to take to the seas in that infamous ‘I Heart T.S’ vest, but he’s doing everything he can to rectify it now. Opting for the classic, failsafe black tuxedo may initially seem like a dull choice, but he wears it with confidence and gusto that we could all learn from. Equally, Dev Patel chooses a slightly more modern take on the tuxedo (note the lack of pocket square) but remains intrinsically classic throughout the entire look. Learn from both, gentlemen, and stand out from the crowd.

Marsden caught our eye for a number of reasons at this year’s SAG, primarily because he chose to take a risk with his outfit. Pairing a midnight blue jacket with a pair of slim-cut black trousers might sound difficult to pull off from the outset, but take a moment to observe it on Marsden. Everything about this look works and doesn’t look as out of place as you’d initially think. If you’re wearing two separates from two different suits, the key is to make sure that the navy is dark enough to go alongside the black of the trousers so that they don’t look too mix-matched. It’s also essential to keep the rest of your outfit (your accessories and your overcoat) as muted and neutral as possible so as not to add too much colour/differentiating fabrics to the look. And remember: confidence is key.
