5 new food joints in London you need to know about

As Autumn creeps in, London’s summer obsession with rooftop bars and street food vendors is (finally) giving way to a raft of newly opened restaurants, with roofs, booths, and serious credentials.

Here’s our guide to the best of the new boys on the block between now and Christmas.

BobBob Ricard Club Room

Bob Bob Ricard Club Room 1

It’s fair to say that BobBob Ricard has divided opinion since it opened in 2008. AA Gill deigned to give it no stars out of five but it has remained a firm favourite with its loyal regulars who love it for the award-winning design, absolute attention-to-detail (Martinis are served with an oyster, in the glass) and impeccable service. Their newly opened £3m Club Room is a continuation on a winning theme, booth seating with ‘Press for Champagne’ buttons and exquisite food, but with a more relaxed atmosphere. There will be regular live music, fine dining and rivers of champagne that will make you feel like the 20s party never stopped, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with a strictly encored upscale dress code. And if you don’t know what that means, it’s not the place for you.

The Cage,

WB-Soho-cage2

Opened: 3rd September // Closest Tube: Oxford Circus // Private functions only

A theatrical private dining addition to the Wright Brother’s growing seafood gastronomy empire, the open kitchen spills into a mock lobster cage with retractable walls that can be moved around to accommodate larger bookings of up to 35. This is undoubtedly some of the freshest (and best) seafood to be found in central London, serving whole brill, king crab, steak and lobster surf ‘n’ turf styles and oyster varieties all sourced from the brothers’ own Cornish farm or from other parts of the UK. They are experimentally combined with Asian flavours and the menu changes daily depending on what they’ve got in – the mark of a restaurant that takes freshness seriously., www.thewrightbrothers.co.uk

Canvas Chelsea,

Screen Shot 2014-09-15 at 12.34.07

Opened: 2nd September // Closest Tube: Sloane Square // 5 course tasting menu lunch from £110 per person with wine

The brainchild of Heston Blumenthal prodigy Michael Riemenschneider, Canvas is as artistic with its food as you might expect. The flexible menu is split into three categories; Sea and Coast, Land and Earth, and Guilty Pleasures. They can be enjoyed a la carte or on smaller plates in the 12 course tasting menus but whichever option you choose, you’ll experience an extraordinary range of unique and inspired food. Afterwards, head to the science-inspired bar for an unexpected mix-up of cocktails.

Kanada Ya

, Opened: August 27th 2014 // Closest Tube: Tottenham Court Road // No reservations policy

The menu here is deceptively simple, because what sets this 24-seater Holborn ramen eatery apart (other than the comical name) is authentic and ferociously careful cooking methods. The award-winning chefs set up in 2009 in Japan and after hearing of London’s ramen craze of late, decided to get in on the act. Each bone is carefully checked before being boiled for the stock and the surface is constantly skimmed to remove impurities, so any comparison to Wagamamas will be long forgotten by the time you reach the bottom of your bowl.

Tredwell’s, , Opened: 10th September // Closest Tube: Leicester Square or Covent Garden // A West End eatery serving food till midnight

tredwells - TGJ.01

The rampantly successful Marcus Wareing takes several steps into the unknown with this venture, it’s his first stand-alone restaurant and the first where he won’t be at all present in the kitchen. Instead, head chef Andrew Ward has taken charge of the 130 seater, 3 floor restaurant and is serving up everything from sticky smoked Goosnargh chicken thighs to gluten-free Hispito burritos. The cocktail menu is more concise and together with the reportedly exceptional service, the initial reviews are very complimentary. If you’re a regular theatre-goer, it’s a must-try before Christmas.
