Classic Car of the Week: 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB 4 Shooting Brake

Ferrari’s had its fair share of weird and wonderful creations in the past. There was the one-off Ferrari 250 GTO ‘Breadvan’ Le Mans racer in 1962, the five-door 456 GT Venice created for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei and this, the 365 GTB/4 Shooting Brake.

Starting life as a regular Ferrari Daytona in 1972, the car was shipped to a dealer in Philadelphia, USA. The radical change came about when real estate developer Bob Gittleman strolled into the dealership and asked for something a little different. Design sketches and plans soon followed and 2 years later the car was shipped to the UK and in the capable hands of independent coachwork builders Panther Westwinds in Surrey. Working to a design by Luigi ‘Coco’ Chinetti Jr. and freelance car designer Gene Garfinkle, the car was made into a shooting brake with nearly every panel being replaced with custom made body work.

On the inside, the interior was redesigned with the dials mounted centrally in the wood trimmed dashboard with wooden decking in the boot. With unconventional engineering at its heart, the car features two gulwing-style rear side windows for access to the boot. The finished article was finally delivered to Gitterman in 1975, where he kept it until 1980. From there the 365 Shooting Brake passed through a number of different owners before making a reappearance in the UK at the Cartier Style et Luxe Concours at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2001, showing only 4,000 miles on the odometer.

Equipped with the Daytona’s four-cam V12, the car produces 352 horsepower with a 0-62 time of 5.9 seconds – not bad going for 1969, I’m sure you’ll agree, gents. Fully restored by Hexagon Classics with the help of Andrew Mackenzie, one of the technicians involved with the initial project, this unique car is back up for sale. Click here for more details.
