The 10 best ways to spend New Year

New Year’s eve is the biggest party night of the year and most people are already busy planning their grand entrance into 2015. Whether you are planning to party or take it easy there are plenty of fun things to do on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

MAYOR OF LONDON’S NEW YEAR’S EVE FIREWORKS DISPLAY

TGJ – 63-2c

Watching the fireworks over the River Thames on New Year’s Eve is great fun for those with families – and as traditional a celebration as they come.

A DAY OUT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

TGJ – 63-3a

For many of us metropolitans, the Christmas season is the only time we get to retreat to the sanctuary of the country. Maybe a final day in the countryside would be welcome before work on the 2nd.

RETRO PARTIES

new year - TGJ.03

For some reason retro New Year’s Eve parties seem to have become de rigueur in recent years. Blitz, Prohibition and Paradise Masked Ball are all terrific parties to check out.

HOGMANAY

TGJ – 63-5a

If you live north of the border – or are a lover of all things Scottish, you might consider celebrating the tradition of Hogmanay which is a joyous, truly celtic occasion – where gifts are given, dances are performed and fires are lit.

RAVE IT UP

TGJ – 63-6a

If your the type who likes to get down on the dance floor, New Years Eve won’t disappoint – especially if you live in London.

ICE SKATE

TGJ – 63-7a

Although ice skating is traditionally a great romantic date before Christmas, most of the London rinks are open well into January. If you missed out before Christmas, why not make up for it on NYE.

VISIT A MUSEUM

TGJ – 63-8a

It’s hard to get to all the exhibitions in London; work, rest and play tends to get in the way. But why not try getting to a museum or a gallery – they’ll all be open and you’ll get to avoid the crowds as everyone will be laid up in bed with a hangover.

WINTER WONDERLAND

TGJ – 63-9a

Winter Wonderland is another great option if you live in a city (most major cities have them now). It’ll be the last chance to visit one until next year.

HOUSE PARTY

new year - TGJ.02

Rather than going in out in the cold – and most likely wet – British December, why not host your own party? Sure you’ll have to clean up after others in the morning but it still beats tramping around outside.

DINNER PARTY

new year - TGJ.01

If you’re slightly too old for house parties – what with the chaos and unbearable hangovers, why not host a dinner party for friends and journey into the new century with those closest to you.

THE NEW YEAR’S DAY PARADE

TGJ – 63-11a

London’s New Year’s Day parade is the crowning celebration of the capital’s festive season and is great fun whether you’re 8 or 80!
